  1. Came to Udon Thani specifically to visit the Red Lotus Lake. Wished we could have stayed longer than the overnight trip. Got here early for sunrise – 45 minutes drive from Udon Thani. There are boats waiting by the jetty – 2 types of boats. Larger boats for Baht500 which can take 6-8 people (with canopy) and the smaller long tail boat for Baht300 which can take 2 people. So very happy that we came here – the flowers were magnificent ! The flowers are actually deep pink water lillies and there were hundreds of thousands of them. Would definitely come again if I get the chance. Flowers bloom in morning and close around noon and peak season is from December to February.

  2. Go early to catch the sunrise. If you can, go for the 90 minute ride to really enjoy. I chose the boat with shade and one advantage is that you can move about easily if the boat is not full.

  3. we made a one day outing from Udon Thani, first to the beautiful Red Lotus Sea, then from here to the (rather disappointing) UNESCO World Heritage site at the Ban Chiang Museum. The Red Lotus Sea definitely saved our day. A one hour boat ride (300 B) all accross and along the lake, with dozens or rather hundreds of birds and millions of water lillies (not lotus), just beautiful. the best time is early morning, not later than 11 AM.

  4. On the Red Lotus Lake in Udon Thani, one can go a relaxing, short safari, ‘boat on the river’ ride, to check out a curious blend of flora and fauna, And the experience is very much, up close and personal, which is great. Additionally there is a nice little mix of cafes and street hawker style shops, close to the water, plus an interesting rainbow coloured jetty, also worth a look. All in all, it really is the proverbial ‘hidden gem’ (check out my YouTube Vlog), in my opinion. And, one of any in the eternally surprising Isaan (Northeastern) region of Thailand. I will be back.

  5. We arrived about 0610, in order to get a boat for the sunrise, and it was surprisingly busy…a whole bunch of loud and inconsiderate cyclists were standing around the road entrance. Once past them, we parked without issue and found the open (but unlit) toilets. The lake is not supposed to open until 0630, but after seeing a few others going out we paid (500 baht) for a large boat for 2 of us for a 90 minute trip.I guess the smaller narrower boats are cheaper, and faster (but speed is probably not why you visit this place?) however – they are narrower and make any passenger movement more tricky. All the boats were petrol fintail driven, which is both noisy and damaging to the plants in the lake…but they seemed to stick to cleared routes and engines were turned off to go into the flowered areas, at which point the ‘driver’ used a pole to punt us around. We did see the sunrise, which was nice…a clearer day would’ve been better – but that’s beyond our control! The flowers were lovely, but clearly ebbing a bit and I suspect we missed the best time in December or January. We are both keen birdwatchers, and saw plenty of very cool birds – and once I managed to communicate via a form of maritime ornithological charades to our driver that we were more interested in the wildlife he transformed what I think would otherwise be a pretty repetitive & narrow view of this large wetland area. We were both pleased we bothered to take our binoculars, as well as our phone cameras – that said, if you are into photography…I suggest you take a decent camera.Practical advice -It was cold, I know it’s obvious but sometimes it needs to be said.Getting on & off could be tricky if you have any mobility limitations…no problem once on of course, and the big boats are stable, roomy and comfortable. We were both glad we made the effort to use the toilets before going out, so a ‘safety wee’ is recommended.A chap was taking photos of people as they walked down to the boats after paying, when we returned there was 2 separate framed photos (one for each of us)…had I twigged this earlier we should have walked down together. 100 baht for each photo, so it makes financial sense! But more importantly, we are a couple and a photo of us as a couple would be more representative of our experience. These photos are very cheesy, but if you don’t mind the odd cheesy tourist thing for the downstairs toilet at home…get one, we did and will have a few laughs yet I’m sure!Overall, a great experience and worth doing. I do see the environmental damage argument put forward in other reviews…but to be honest, I didn’t think it was that bad. Given the choice, I’d take a kayak out for a day…but that’s not an option and would probably be worse if everyone did that. There is a cafe that does food, I mentioned toilets and there are a few touristy type market stalls.

  6. Better come here so early morning and stay here for the beautiful scenery for around 1.30-2 hrs. Recommend to rent leng tail boat with 150 baht fee per person. One long tail boat can carry 2 person excluded the boat driver. This place can visit during November till aroung February in each year. Lots of pink lotus in the lake waiting for your memory shutter. No drone service for the top-down photo, but recommend you can take by your own. The boat driver can help take you the photo and give them some tip for remuneration.

  7. We have been to this amazing lake a few times now, we love the amazing scenery of these thousands of flowers which makes great photos. I am not a morning person and this trip requires an early start as the photos are best at sunrise but the awesome views make it worthwhile. Another reason to get up early is that the flowers close up when the heat of the day kicks in.Locals have told us that it is a myth that the flowers only open during the short winter season, they say the flowers are there all year just a bit less outside the peak season.Last time we enjoyed the annual trip more by staying a couple of days at a newly opened accommodation, Bua Daeng Homestay, which is very close to the lake. Very handy so you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night with only a couple of minutes to drive from the accommodation to the lake.

  8. Boat trip on a lake almost covered by red lotus flowers and a very few whites. Located not far outside Udon Thani. The area is quite big, the lake with a few small islands, one with cows. Many birds. Quite nice for a couple of hours

  9. Amazing Red Lotus Lake, the whole 10000 Acres of red lotus. With migration birds flying above,sunrise..it is just mesmazing. This is definitely a Must if you visit Issan area.So many photo shoots area, happy to witness the nature beauty.

  10. I went here today early around 6.50 am. If you can go for the sunrise it would be awesome I think we just missed it. We took the boat for 2 people 150 per person. The driver helped with some nice photos. This is one of those places in the world that photos don’t do justice. It’s absolutely beautiful and a must do if in Udon Thani or nearby. November to February is the season to go.

  11. I went twice to the Red Lotus Lake in Udon Thani province, and I can affirm that Nirvana must surely be colored pink! Millions of pink lotuses, well, except one (see photo)! Seeing the first rays of sunshine smiling on millions of pink petals gives my heart so much joy that will last all year, until the next flowering season!
