Wat ahong is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Buengkan province, Thailand
This wat is grand with large strange rock formations. It is so close to Laos that you feel you are in Laos. Walk through the rock formations, walk into town and find great food, relax and meditate on the Mekong river waters.
This rates as probably my favourite spot in northern Thailand. A beautiful temple surrounded by wonderful by some luscious green grounds and somewhat fascinating rock formations which just don’t look part of the area. You can stroll along the river and sit in the shade in some small cabins and view a few fishermen in the river. The river is very narrow here and then widens out considerably, apparently in the rainy season it can be very fast flowing here and a whirlpool forms. This is just one of those places where you can sit down in very peaceful and serene surroundings.
`Wat Ahong is the Navel of the Mae Kong Rive.A walk through the luscious green grounds with beautiful rock formations .Its a beautiful place.there is a tour company in Bueng Kan that can take you Bueng Kan Tours.
We were attracted by the Navel of Mekong, I could not really spot the navel but the rock formation were quite unexpected. All this is within lush temple ground. Good place to take a rest from the drive from Nongkhai and Bueng Kan
It is not something really exiting, but if you are near make a stop, look and walk around. Enjoy the Mekong (see Laos over the river), make some pictures, just be in peace with the surrounding.
Great experience, bucket list, wear light airy clothes and good footwear if height is a problem, you can tell Shane and take a short trip, still well worth the visit
Unusual location on the mekong where the river narrows and bends causing deep whirlpools given the right water conditions. Peaceful setting and location of 3 temples. We satay on temple on site accommodation, clean and simple. Would recommend sunrise /sunset experience and to just relax. Temple people very friendly and approachable. Worth a night’s stay to fully experience it.
Another pleasant spot along the Mekong. Aside from the view of the narrow stretch of the river (which is reportedly very deep and at times churning, thus named the “navel of the Mekong”), there is a well-manicured garden with huge boulders, temples, trees and flowering plants.
