Lalu is a natural phenomenon located in Thap Rat Sub-district of Ta Phraya. The place is promoted as a main tourist attraction of Sa Kaeo Province. Wind and rain eroded the soil and shaped a strange landscape in this area, similar as Phae Mueang Phi in Phrae Province. We arrived here by bicycle on a tour of Sa Kaeo Province, so it was easy to explore the site. In case you don’t have a bike you can hire local transport (tractor including the farmer-driver) at the nearby village. The place is worthwhile a visit as you do not often have the possibility to see such a landscape. There is no hotel accommodation in the area available, but there is possibility for home stay. No fee to visit the site.
We stopped on the way from Sakaeo to Buriram – the main road goes very close to lalu, maybe 15 minutes off that road. When you arrive in the village you park up and take a motorized tractor. It costs Baht 300 (don’t know if that is for the return trip or for an hour, probably the former). Good feeling knowing your helping the local farmers; it was very dry in March when we visited and next to know crops growing. It’s a short ride there and back. You then wander around looking at this weird looking place. Well worth an hour of anybody’s time.
That was a random visit and it’s worth it. Not so easy to get there. We asked at least 3 different people. Every body was so helpfull.
It is a natural canyon located in Sakaew Province. This place is not run by any authorities, it is run and organized by local people in the area. Personally, I love this place because the scenic is raw; there is hardly any man-made structure in the area (only the sign La-lu that is man-made). So, it is very local. Although located in Thailand, not many Thai people know this place either. I would say that it is kind of an ‘unseen’ place. However, this place would not be good to visit during rainy day since it is sand canyon, it will be soaky and filthy on the rainy day. Somehow, I visited this place during rainy season of Thailand (Jun), but luckily it was a sunny day. I spent 1-2 hrs at the canyon because I brought my grad gown to take some pics, but normally it should not take long to explore the place. Probably, about half an hour should be enough. How to get there: This place is only accessible by car. No public transportation. So, you might have to rent a car if you want to go there. You can search the location on Google Map too (search “Lalu”, 230 km from Bangkok). Once you get there, you have to take an E-Thak (one kind of tractor) to get into the canyon. It costs 200 THB (round trip) for the whole E-Thak trip (max 6 pax.)Tips: Prepare water coz’ it gets very hot on a sunny day, and there is no shop at the canyon.
La-Lu is a small farming village in Ta Phraya District of Sa Kaeo Province that boasts some unusual land formations that are attracting both local and overseas tourists.Over years the hard packed red clay of the area has, in many placed, been eroded by wind and rain. On the upper levels this has created large craters in the ground and at the lower levels has created an alien landscape of columns, flutes, and other weird shapes, some of which resemble the organ pipes of a large cathedral.La-Lu is easy to find because it is well sign-posted in every direction for miles around. When you arrive, there is a parking area about a kilometer from the first of these “moonscape” areas. Here farmers have attached two bench buggies to farm tractors and will take you to the areas of interest. Cost of a visit to the nearest of these sites is Baht 300 for foreigners (I think it is only Baht 200 for Thais), or Baht 500 for a visit to one of the larger sites further away.It is a burgeoning local tourist business for the local farmers, who are able to supplement their meager incomes from farming.
We love seeing different sites when travelling and as we were riding motorbikes (scooters!) from Bangkok to Buriram for the MotoGP decided to take the less direct route to visit La-Lu. We stopped overnight in Sa Kaeo and before we left, googled the directions. It was well signposted and easy to find. We found the farmers with their tractors but they were happy for us to ride our bikes through the Lalu canyon ourselves. There is no entrance fee to look around. We only spent about 45 minutes here as it was so hot, but the the Lalu canyons were just amazing, felt like we were on Mars! Make sure you take plenty of water with you! There were no other tourists here and it was amazing to see some natural and seemingly undisturbed landscapes.
Beautiful spot. Off the beaten path and a hidden gem. Still very authentic, tourism hasn’t taken over, smiles are real. Food at pick up point is delicious and you get to watch granny deseeding tamarinds and all sorts of village life. The landscape in Lalu makes you feel like spending an hour or two (acessible area isn’t too vast) like being on a different planet. The detour was well worth it!
Rip off place. Wanted to charge us Farang (foreigner) price of 300 TH when we turned up. All for a tiny attraction you can finish seeing in 5 mins. We laughed and drove away. This place is not that special. It was in fact empty when we turned up. There’s a similar place in Phrae with a larger soil formation – Pae Muang Pee Park- and it is free to visit that one. Spread the word about the greedy locals and avoid.
I understand that this attraction is run by the local community and therefore did not grumble at having to pay the admission of 300. As for the attraction I took it all in and this lasted 15 minutes. It took an hour to get there! I can only say it was just ok, but to be fair unspoiled.
