  1. This experience is one of the very best we have tried for many years. We booked 4 days on a houseboat in Sangkla Buri, Khao Laem National park. We booked through lakesafarithailand.com, which is as far as we know and could see in the area, the only bureau that offers this in that area. It was a truly fantastic experience with stunning sunsets and sunrisings and a program that was not too hectic/crazy. The scenery is beautiful and you learn a little about the history of the area, how the locals live and visit temples, markets, villages, the Hell fire museum and see the bridge over river kwai etc. But the best part is that you really get the sense that you are off the beaten track because there are no other western tourists in sight. Only by the Hell Fire Museum of course. Even though youre not in a tourist area you are taken good care of from the pick up in central Bangkok with stops to have a coffee and later lunch, to living on the boat where a local family cooks, cleans and just have a good laugh with you from time to time. Not to forget the ever attending personal guide who also lives on the boat and has arrangements for everything and with ease gets you through the activities of the day. The food was really good and there was free coffee and tea and water throughout the day. Now for the boat: it is big and clean with 6 big rooms two people per room in average. There is a sundeck and 2 kayaks and the water is warm to swim in when you like. There is also an area for dining and separate bathrooms for men and women with western standard toilets. Dont expect the water for shower to be warm though! And do expect the motor used to drag the houseboat on the lake to be noisy. It does not run all the time though. Also remember to have everything fully charged from home because there is not so much electricity unless they power the motor which again is noisy. I recommend this trip to everyone because it is such a wonderful experience where you can relax and still learn a little bit about the province in picturesque surroundings. To make things right I have to say that we were only 2 couples on the boat that week/4 days. And this cant help but make our experience even more luxurious as there is room for 4 more couples. I also have to give credit to the bureau lakesafarithailand.com for not cancelling our bookings or charging us extra for not being fully booked that week/4 days. Give yourself a wonderful experience and try this trip on this houseboat. It is really worth the money. If you can then book it with close friends or family, you wont regret it!

  2. … really allows you to appreciate how beautiful it is. It’s not five-stars for comfort, but it’s a lot easier than you might imagine. The views are stunning and you get to see some out-of-the-way fishing villages as you are towed around. Along the way, it’s worth noticing the impact these huge reservoirs have on the economy and lifestyles of local people. The cities and large-scale industry and agriculture need the water, and they create incidentally these very beautiful environments for tourists like us, but the indigenous Mon culture has suffered a lot in the process.

  3. A fantastic trip on a houseboat with perfect scenary and service. If you can live 3 nights with great athmosphere, beautiful sunsets and absolut quiertness, and no aircon or own toilet, look at this. There is seperate toilet with shower for men and woman and the night temperature is fine. Dont miss out on this if you are in the area.

  4. The lake is really beautiful. You can hire a longtail boat in Sangkhlaburi to take you on a ride on this very large, man-made lake. The price is 300 bath for 1 to 6 people for touring the submerged temple and other old wat.

  5. This is a beautiful place. They have several hotels in town (Thong Pha Phum) and also river bungalows/houses similar to camping or glamping conditions. We stayed at VIP Floatel and the food was good, iced coffee delicious, room bungalow overlooking the dam decent enough. Simple, 1 plug, 1 TV, nothing fancy. Staff speaks a little English. Can swim in the dam. Can take a boat and see beautiful birds, trees, Buffalo, cows etc. It was worth coming but do NOT come here expecting to catch fish like on the YouTube videos Bangkok hooker and fishing ez. We tried for 2 days, 2 full days and got nothing. The pros with us also tried and got nothing. My understanding is that these youtube videos are fake with actors who had paid for their promos, fish fed and scouted for days beforehand, and fish bought and out in water, etc. Fake basically. But it is a very relaxing place so I’d recommend for a holiday.

  6. Took a nice 60 minute tour by longtail boat. Was by myself and paid 300b. I boarded at the base of the wooden bridge and the driver cruised me around to some interesting sights. At one point he dropped me off on shore across the lake to visit a dilapidated temple on a hilltop. Not really worth the trouble. I was on the lake from 9AM to 10AM. Most people recommend a sunrise tour, which for me didn’t happen (wink). Felt that this was worth the money. Also, there are food and drinks for sale at the “dock”.

  7. The lake/national park was extended some 25 years ago when the dam was built that flooded not only the now famous (underwater) temple, but lots of land. It’s always worth to take a boat ride – long tail boats available from the bridge at 300.- THB for about an hour and various stops.

  8. Khao Laem Lake is a big lake behind Vajiralongkorn damm. After building the damm villages and their temples where flooded and the temple went partially or totally underwater. You can take a boat tour from Mon bridge, which is the longest wooden pedestrian bridge in Thailand. The boat would take you to the sites of underwater temples and to historic temples that are still on dry banks. It is a far away, few hours car drive from Bangkok to near Myanmar border beyond Kanchanaburi but worth visiting. Mon bridge in Sangkhla buri is fun to walk on at sunrise to look at the lake and the mist/fog on its surface.

  9. Enjoyed the view from Pom Pee and the boat ride from Sangklaburi. Some interesting half submerged temples to be seen.

  10. Khao Laem Lake was created in 1984, when nearly 40,000 hectares of land and forests were flooded upon completion of the Vajiralongkorn Dam. The area has some spectacular scenery, and interesting things to see and do. Visitors can take a boat trip from near the wooden Mon bridge to see submerged temples and enjoy the lake (300 baht set price to see the main submerged temple and 500 if visiting two others). The Mon bridge is a truly amazing structure that has been fully rebuilt after part of it collapsed a few years ago. The lake itself offers some beautiful scenery, but one has to consider at what cost in terms of inundated forests, biodiversity, and local villages.
