Wat Tham Phra Phothisat is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thap Kwang, 18260, Thailand
We stopped off here after a three day trip to Khao Yai. Our guide recommended this cave. There were no tourists, its free to get in and you just need to get the key from the monks (huge temple on the site) and turn on the cave lights Good footwear needed. There are two walks you can do a much longer one which goes between two mountains or the shorter one which we did. Its around 500m long but wow lots of stairs and tricky footwork. Some of our students struggled and a few were in tears but I loved it. The walk we did was the path of an older river so in parts it was flat and the start is a little tricky. Its a must if you are in the areas. The walls were spectacular and just inside the entrance our guide saw a massive tarantula spider which was covered in his web with his feet sticking out. Beware of the monkeys outside the cave I was carrying a bar of soap to the toilet to wash my hands after the cave trekking and the money run up to me and grabbed it from my hand and opened it from the box and started eating it. They could easily do the same with your mobile phone. The monkeys here are long-tailed ones. The stray dogs are pretty friendly and well looked after,
Tham Phra Bodhisattva Temple or Tham Phra Ngam Temple It is a Vipassana Dhamma temple hidden in the middle of a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides. The villagers in the area call it “Khao Namphu”.Inside the temple there are many beautiful rock caves. There are both small and large sizes. You can walk in and admire the beauty. Inside the cave, there are many stalagmites, stalactites, and historical traces to study. The most interesting caves are “Bodhisattva Cave” as the temple is named. Inside the cave, there are bas-relief carvings which are works of art from the Dvaravati period. (13-14 Buddhist century) on the cave wall. I had limited time, so I didn’t walk up to look at the cave. In addition to having caves to see, there is also a Sala Dhamma Chedi. It is a gold-white Ceylon-shaped pagoda standing tall and prominent on the white building contrasting with the bright sky. Sala Dhamma Chedi is surrounded by Naga stairs. (Being an angel) But it has a serpent’s tail) is a staircase leading up and down for worshiping the sacred things inside the pagoda. Around the pavilion there are small ponds on every side of the stairs. The inside of the temple area is clean but there are quite a lot of monkeys so you have to be careful. Don’t carry bags or anything with bright colors that catch the eye. They will think that there is food and they will come and steal it.
