  1. A huge festival for the province of Nong Khai with people travelling from all over Thailand to witness the Naga fireballs, glowing orbs shooting skywards at high speeds from the Mekong River in October. To locals, the event is known as bung fai paya nak (Naga fireballs). Some believe the flaming balls which burst from the surface of the Mekong River to be the breath of the fearsome Naga, a river serpent of Buddist lore that roams the river in this part of the Nong Khai province. I have a science background and have seen the fireballs a dozen times over the last twenty years and i am still not sure how they are produced. They come from under the surface and rise with uniform velocity with no tail.To me they appear like glowing balls and i have seen them appear a few metres away so definitely not tracer amunition from a gun.It is essential to book a room months in advance if you want top local accommodation ( Lar Char hotel,Boontawee hotel. ) As i type there are some lower quality rooms available.Traffic can be a nightmare on the day with half hour journeys from Nong Khai taking six hours.Leave early. You can park at Wat Laung, just before Phon Phisai and walk for twenty minutes to the town.Phon Phisai waterfront gets packed with hundreds of food vendors.Best to bring a mat and some boose and sit on the riverbank.I have seen most fireballs over the years at the Wat Thai temple. You cannot miss it as it has a fifty food Naga serpent statue looking out over the river.

  2. This festival is expected to set fireballs at the beginning of sunset , it’s orange colored fireball erupting from the waters to the sky. It continues to come out from the water in set. I needed to reserve my space for watching this miracle of the year by go at the Mae Khong riverbank since afternoon. There was crowds of tourists and locals waiting for the fireballs. There was a phenomenon like picnic festival or party. This year is the celebration that requested to reduce due to king mourning but the fireballs comes at the end of last light finally.

  3. I expected a quiet traditional festival with lanterns gently lifting into the sky. I was incorrect. The festival is huge, busy and there are many more things to see besides “fire balls”. In actuality I hardly saw any, there were no more than 5 lanterns floating through the sky at a time. What there was to see was an amazing light display on the river. Boats were setup like floats decorated with LED lights. Fireworks were continually being set off from the Laos side of the river, a giant shrine of a multi-headed dragon was lit up and visible from a KM away. There was live performances, a catered dining area with a stage at the front honoring the King. Food carts, drink stands, candy floss and a small temple. If you come in on the main road park at the Shell, 7-Eleven or other gas station. Parking is free of charge there. Do not bother with the congested parking areas. There will be someone there to assist you in where to park and they may ask you to leave your vehicle in neutral so they can move it back to allow others to leave before you return. A tuk-tuk will take you to the festival from there for 20 baht per person. Walking back to where you park is generally the fastest and there is a huge market between the parking and the festival that is worth a look. The police do an excellent job managing the traffic when everyone is leaving. It does take some time and patience to get away from the congestion but the officers make sure trucks and busses do not hold up the traffic.

  5. The food and a 5 liter bottle of Black Label,i shared to the end with wife and my four Thai friends.I saw the nature display already 40 years ago and it can only be seen in this time and by full moon, because a plankton produces methane gas and because it is lit only by the moonlight, no fireworks. In the early years there were only a few tourists beside the locals, but later they swelled to a hundred thousand.

  6. My repeated visits for this phenomenon. See to belief. First visit 10 years back was the best and unbelievable. Fireball shot up after dark from mekong river just less than few meters from view. It shot suddenly with no sound n smell, Pink/Orange fireball size of about 8-20inches diameter. Like meteor straight up 19storey n vanished. Start with one or two, then continuously 8-9 balls. Subsequent visits sighted far view, also from Lao side.Last year was pretty good, right I’m front of our view but smaller ballsThis year 2020 shud be good as last year fairMore locals and be prepared madness jam on return highway, unless u get a accommodation there. Need to book at least 6 months in advance
