10 thoughts on “Wat Umong Mahathera ChanTemple

  1. Wat Umong Mahathera Chan is within the old city walls, this is not Wat Umong with the tunnels. I couldn’t find much history on this Wat but did find this… “It’s famous for the Monks’ Cave, a niche in the main chedi where monks used to meditate”. I was there late in the day & there were many monks on the grounds. Very peaceful.

  2. this temple is located inside the old city. i understand there is another Wat Umong which is out of the city. the design and the architecture is beautifully done. the carving on the wall are amazing. it is old but maintained. the compound is clean, peaceful and calm.

  3. A varied WAt with a lot to see and admire. The architecture and ornamentation are spectacular. There is so much to see here and in the area around and within the old walled city. This whole area is a must see.

  4. There are so many beautiful Temples in the Old City of Chiang Mai.This one is nice, serene, an island of piece…since it is not one fo the famous ones.We happened to pass by it on our way back to our hotel from our daily Temple circuit. We had pin pointed the most famous ones like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh which are amazing. After a Massage break to relax form a long day walk in the Old City we found this Temple.Every Temple in Chiang Mai is worth stopping and visiting, wWe have seen many of them and regret none. However there those you intend or have to go to and those you stop by on your way. This is one of them, but in no way a regretful experience, on the contrary.

  5. Located seemingly in a remote forest a short distance from Chiang Mai central, only the occasional jet airplane passing overhead reminds you you are not in the 12th century. Underground tunnels with many BUDDAH are underneath the central chedi. Absorb the tranquility before you “time travel” back to today!Grab a tuk tuk both ways. You can’t go wrong!

  6. This Wat Umong Mahathera ChanTemple is often confused with the simple ‘Wat Umong” – the one with the tunnels, a little out of town.Wat Umong Mahathera ChanTemple is another good temple in the old city if you’re in the neighbourhood. With so many temples in Chiang Mai, it’s not worth crossing town for, but it’s as good as many others. The features here are two very old chedis (stupas), a meditation centre and interesting grounds. When I visited, they were collecting fruit from the many trees in the grounds.Note that this is directly opposite Wat Pan Ping, so you can visit two good temples for the price of one. They’re both close to ‘Zoe in Yellow’ in case you’re looking for redemption.

  7. This temple is also in the old city and boasts being a mediation training center. It has a very quaint entrance and is adorned with artistic works from the fences to the temple. Wonderful.

  8. At this temple, quite hidden away in a side alley that you might think to walk down. If we were not on a private tour, we would not even notice this side road ?.There is a special Buddha in the chapel here which is not accessible to visitors but your tour guide may be lucky enough to ask the head monk to put on a light show to see one Buddha with different facial expression under different ? and colours. We were so lucky to see it but no photo was allowed. ?There are bamboo huts for visitors to meditation ?‍♀️ ?‍♂️ should you wish and donate something at your discretion.

  9. Felt very peaceful and unhurried. For most of my visit, I had the temple to myself.Take your time and read the many helpful sayings posted around the temple.
