The drive is a bit long with very winding narrow roads from Chiang Mai. We hired a driver/guide. So glad we did as we were able to observe villages along the way without concern for safety. At the top the views were amazing. There were not many tourists but was told during the high season it can be very crowded. In the distance you could see all the rice and vegetables that were planted in tiers on the mountain. Also we saw many areas if organized tent “resorts” that people can rent. There were adorable Hmong children in their costumes running and playing tag with each other. There is a place to eat and soak up the serene atmosphere. And there are some stalls where souvenirs as well as local craftspeople sell their products.
We used to enjoy taking visitors from abroad here but we will never do so again.Previously there was a pleasant open sided restaurant with additional sala seating outside with great views of the mountains serving a goodly selection of Thai and Western food, including a fantastic locally made strawberry cream tea with scones and real cream. All now demolished and replaced with a bare patch of poor grass! The lovely comfortable coffee bar and cafe has also gone. You are now forced to park about 400 metres much lower down and charged 30 Baht for the privilege of having to walk up a steep hill to get to the top. Impossible if you are elderly or infirm.Even the views are somewhat spoilt as many are covered in camping tents and accompanying latreens.Appalling. We shall not go again. Very disappointed.
The place is up on the mountain. Weather is nice , cool , breezy. Long drive from Chiang Mai. Parking is difficult. The flower field nothing to shout about. I think this place managed by the villagers . It need expert help to make it more exiting. The public toilets is horrible.
Living in a tropical place is always hot & humid weather all year round. However, there are certain tropical countries blessed with mountains and highlands like Thailand. Chiang Mai, located on the Northern part of Thailand has an elevation of 1000 m and surrounded by several mountain ranges. It is indeed cooler than Bangkok but there are even cooler places than the city itself. Just outside the city is the central district of Mae Rim about 40 mins by car and this is the place where many natural parks, gardens, forest, nature trails, highlands, farms, flower fields and the surrounding mountains of Chiang Mai even Chiang Rai can be seen. One of the most beautiful and must see place to visit here is Doi Mon Jam. Part of the Lung-Nong-Hoi Royal Project which started in 1984, it was once a forest which transformed into a charming and learning eco-agro-tourism destination. It converted the once forested area into a flower field, farm, camping site, nature trails, gardens, dining and shopping options. Because of this not only it contributed to the tourism activities of the region it also became the main source of income for the locals living in this area. At an elevation of around 1300 m, the weather in Mon Jam experience Subtropical highland climate which have pleasant weather all year round averaging in the 20 celcius. The best months to visit this place is during the winter season from Nov to Feb where the weather could be even cooler. We went there last Dec and booked a private bus from Chiang Mai Old city. The travel time only about 40 mins and surprisingly there is no traffic. The hilly roads on the way up is pretty safe and well paved although once you reached the destination there are some patches of dirt roads but it was part of this experience. When we reached our destination, there are tons of stores, shops and food stalls selling local items, drinks and foods around the area. I especially noticed those big fat green Thai avocados which are in season and I regret not buying them – will do next time. Our main destination is the Mon Jam Flower farm after seeing those lovely flower shots in IG I always dreamt of going here. Parking is spacious and easy and there are no lines to purchase the entrance ticket. I saw some lovely Bamboo trees along the way which I don’t see often at a tropical country. Since were still in the middle of the pandemic, I don’t see Western or Asian tourists but mostly locals. Nevertheless, we are glad that its not crowded so we have space to take those lovely photos and videos. First impression – its very charming!!! We feel were not in hot tropical country but somewhere in Europe in the Alps. I was very impressed how beautiful, organized and well maintained this flower farm is. They made it so beautiful, clean and organized which gives me the impression that were in this Hollywood movies like the Lord of the Rings or the Sound of Music. They arranged and segregated the flowers according to their variety and colours. I loved the striking and dazzling purple tones of the Purple Margarets – I was under the impression their Lavenders when I saw in photo but regardless their equally lovely. Their right at the center as you walk from the entrance and on the left side of the farm. And right over the distant horizon I could see the mountains of Chiang Rai on a perfect clear sunny day cool day. On the right side from Purple Margarets there are more flower varieties including those lovely cute little white daisies, dazzling gorgeous Red poinsettias which are the flowers of Xmas, Purple & Yellow Daises of different colours and sizes, pure Golden Everlasting flowers which last for eternity when dried, and the other star of the farm – Poaceae Grasses which have very much cotton like buds but instead of round their vertical and in full bloom showcasing brown, white and purple colours. I have the chance and privilege and too much excitement to take a lot of lovely photos and videos all around the farm and almost all of their flower varieties. Be mindful when you venture off course the paved track since the soil could be uneven but overall its pretty safe. Since this is an agro-tourist farm, there are several insta-worthy installments placed around this farm like the rustic vintage motorbike near the entrance surrounded by daises which I really loved (posted in IG of course). There are several benches, rails and tables with an amazing and undisturbed view of the whole farm, the highlands, mountains and the camping tents just on the opposite side the mountain. We would like to try the latter the next time we visit this place and stay overnight so we could experience the recommended sunrise and sunset views especially when your up here high in the mountains. I would recommended to spend an hour or two in the place especially if you don’t stay overnight so you could really feel nature and its surroundings. The opposite side of the farm which is just 5 mins walk from the entrance is the Strawberry Field and the Skywalk cafe which has a separate entrance fee and features Strawberries, more flowers, relaxing cafe with an spectacular view of the other side of Mon Jam highlands ( I will make a separate review for this). There are several other attractions scattered all over this place which we would like to visit the next time we visit Chiang Mai and I couldn’t wait to get back for more beauty, charm and surprises awaiting me!!! This is a truly a must visit place whenever you visit Thailand it is all worth it not only you experienced such spectacular place but also you contributed to the livelihood of the local people. See you soon again Doi Mon Jam!!!!
