Monkey Training Center is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Mu 4, Hat Shai Khao Tambon, Thailand
The tourist brochure our hotel gave us featured the Monkey School (Monkey Training Center), telling us we could watch monkeys trained to do many tricks, like riding bicycles, playing electric guitars and collecting coconuts and fruit from trees.It said there were shows at 10 am, 2 pm and 4 pm and that admission was 200 baht. The website we checked also mentioned a 200 baht fee.We duly showed up at 2 pm to find the place deserted. Absolutely nobody in sight.On top of that we saw through the sculptured “monkey” gate of the school the monkeys in relatively small iron barred cages in grounds that looks neglected.On top of that a large sign at the empty ticketing office said admission was 400 baht, double what was advertised.We decided we could do without watching wild animals perform for our amusement and left.As an aside, the monkeys here are red-tailed marques, which abound wild on the island. You only have to drive down Rural Road through some of the rain forests to see whole troupes of them sitting on the roadside. There are big males and many females, some still carrying their babies on their backs.It is forbidden to feed these wild monkeys and there are severe fines for anyone caught doing so.But that doesn’t stop you from enjoying the sight of these monkeys in the wild, instead of behind bars to be let out three times a day to perform grotesque tricks for the amusement of tourists.
We ended up here after a strong recommendation of our driver (the car w had hired)Its essentially a tourist trap but worse its inhumane to the core. The monkeys are chained and kept in small cages. They are trained to do actions to seek your attention to get food (we saw one jumping up and down non stop for 10 minutes a long as we were in sight). They are made to perform tricks which would have been a novelty in 19th century but should be banned outright! Eg a monkey is made to ride a tricycle with a chain around its neck which is trainer uses to provide directions.Are there no agencies / animal welfare agencies noticing this? Regret being here – and wish its closed soonest so that the torture on the monkeys ends
Koh Cang is a National Park Island. WHY keep monkeys in such a desolate place. Have seen professional Monkey Training places in Thailand which were good. Where the monkeys had really BIG natural space..- . Do not go here. Want to see monkeys? Make a jungletrekk or on the hill of White Sand instead. P.S please do not feed the monkeys on the Island. They have enough food. Otherwise they learn to snatch you rucksacks, bags etc. And if they do not get what they want…they can get a bit agressive. So don’t teach it to them
Horrible!If you love animals do not go there they treat them in a super cruel way 🙁 it was sad to watch.
