Ko Mai Thon Island is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Koh Mai Thon is a private Island located quite near from Cape Panwa. We decided to visit this place for many reasons. On one side, it wasn’t so full like other well-known islands (Phi Phi, Bamboo, Coral, etc.). On the other side, it is located quite near from the Cape Panwa. We are tired of spending long time travelling by speedboat and bus transfers. I think that this place has some issues to correct. They forbade us to bathe in one beach; we have to stay in the same one all day. In addition, they were building a Resort, so also this beach area was shortened. They should advise people where they can make scuba diving. I found a nice area nearby the breakwater where people disembark. On the opposite side, they rent deck chairs and sun umbrella and you eat seated in a restaurant (some islands have a “special protection”, so you have to eat on the floor).(Please, if you find my opinion useful, vote it 😉 )
High expectations that were met by the great catamaran sail to and fro. Very clean beach with clear water – and despite being monsoon, we had great weather. The bad? Despite such a pricey tour package, we were charged for beach chairs, the scrumptious buffet was passable, hygiene was questionable with wait staff sticking their bare hands into the juice dispensers(?!!) We paid 3000 TBH for a 45 min scuba diving experience, which lasted less than 10 minutes, because the instructor, who was guiding me and one other person, was so absorbed in taking photos, that he left me to flounder and eventually call others on the beach for help!! And of course, no question of a refund. All in all, stay away from the extras, and absorb the calm – nice enough for a day tour.
We wanted a relaxing and more private island experience so we went there with on a sunset tour 30-35 person yacht under Blue Phoenix Travels, for the package price we paid I think it’s a little overpriced. If I recall correctly we paid around 3200-3300THB per person. The island facilities are pretty much ‘aging’. It doesn’t feel like an exciting resort but rather a rundown resort if it makes any sense. There are two choices of beach chairs and umbrellas for rent, 300THB and 700THB. The 300THB will get you a pair of chairs with 2 bottles of water while the 700THB will get you a further 2 extra cans of coke and a pair of beach towels. We got the snorkeling gears and vests for free as part of the yacht package. The beach itself is spread with broken corals here and there making it hard to just sit and enjoy the wavy waters. The snorkeling was quite disheartening as the corals were mostly dying or dull. Sea cucumbers are in abundance, with the usual sea urchins poking about here and there. You will find the usual sea fishes swimming about but nothing too spectacular that we’d want to revisit this private island. We don’t dive so perhaps this island is better explored through diving? All in all for what we did, it’s an overrated island from our experience. We definitely won’t be heading back there. We had more fun at Karon beach relaxing in the wavy waters while watching the sun set, despite the crowd. That beach is free of broken coral pieces so we could just sit and run against the waves without worries.I think the ‘private island’ label for Maiton can be a dual edge sword, on one hand it’s truly quiet, but that also means it’s a lot less lively and you’d run out of things to do quickly. their paragliding was 1500THB! Given the low number of visiting tourists, the resort is run rather sparsely, resulting in a rather rundown experience. Most of the people that went with us ended up running out of things to do early and waiting to board the yacht back.Alas, please go there on normal speedboats which costs less or spend your time and money on other islands!
I was travelling here by tour on KLOOK. it was such a great view, i love maithon island. wanna going back !
Mai Thon Island, also known as Honeymoon Island, is a private island. After it became a tourist attraction, the Thai government gave it the beautiful name, “Honeymoon Island”. This aptly named romantic island has azure blue water and white sandy beaches. Apart from large coconut groves, the island also has dense virgin forests. An even more important thing is that there are very few tourists on the island, so the environment is very quiet and peaceful.
If you are after pristine beaches away from the crowds, then this is the place to be. We should have done more planning before the trip but turned out to be very fortunate with the hotel concierge’s recommendation about the tour company and the destination. There’s so much choice in Phuket about island hopping that you have to be very clear about what you want to see and what you don’t want to see. (The more famous sites are, I gather, victims of their own success and you are jammed together with hundreds of other tourists). For me I wanted a bit of snorkelling (not scuba) and somewhere reasonably close to the hotel. Some of the Phuket based tours start at 6 am which was not for us :-)The full day package we chose began with an 8 am collection from the hotel, picking up other tourists on the way before meeting at the pier in Phuket Town. You can grab a complimentary light breakfast, buy some beachwear and then the island is a 15 minute fast boat ride together with about 25 other tourists (locals and international). The tour group has exclusive rights with I think only one other company and so you pretty much have the whole island (or the northern part at least) to yourself. If you want exclusivity and picture perfect views, you can’t ask for more.I’m a beginner snorkeler and short sighted so can’t comment on what the reefs were like but even I could squint and see fish swimming around me. As for the sand on the beach, it was powdery white :-)As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel on the island is pretty tired looking. It has seen far better days. But there’s more enough to do on the island – wander on the beach, go to the viewpoint, have lunch (fried chicken, noodles, seafood etc) – such that you can enjoy the island in all its natural beauty. Lastly, would recommend Love Andaman as a tour group. The minibus and boats were in good condition, tour guide and crew most helpful and friendly, food decent and prices reasonable for what’s a really good day out.
Top diving experience on the boat not so much people around very quite Warm sea fish everywhere love this place
Cristal clear tirquose water with long white sandy beach! You can hire complet two sunbeds and umbrella for 300 baht (+2 bottle water). Around is pool and whos like, can swim in pool. Restaurant and beach bar is also on the beach.
It’s a little more expensive than the drinks on the mainland. But that is to be expected. The beach-chairs are 100 bath/day. Be aware of the Monkeys.
We went as a group of friends (4 ppl) for a one day trip by sailing catamaran. The whole trip was worth the money. Although not much activity to do on the island, but if you like a very private beach with nice blue sea and white sand. You’d love this island as much as we do!
