I would not think of going to Bangkok without seeing my friend Alex for a Hello, a catchup on how the world is doing and having a gorgous outfit made. Last time Alex designed and made a gorgeous Dress and matching coat in the most shimmering Thai Silk. I get complements every time I wear it. I’ve purchased around three dozen suits and countless shirts from Alex’s over nearly thirty years. All fitted perfectly and I’m still wearing suits I bought 25 years ago – a testament to the quality of cloth and tailoring. Helped keep me in shape too – I’ve never put on weight because I wanted to keep fitting into my suits! I’ve never bargained with Alex’s either. Not the cheapest, but in this case you really do get what you pay for.

I have lived and worked in Thailand and Laos since 1970. I have had only three tailors during that time. My first one died many years ago. My second one has folded up his shop and now only serves customers at their homes and he is handing over his business to the next generation. My third one is Alex’s IL-Sarto — by far the most outstanding tailor I have had since living in Asia. I needed some new suits and a tuxedo and his work was simply without compare. He is up-to-date in fashions from Europe and New York and Los Angeles. He is an excellent tailor who makes an extra effort to make sure that you are fitted perfectly. He specializes in men’s tailoring and will not accept even alterations on women’s clothing — I have tried by recommending a woman friend to him — he refused. Alex IL-Sarto is a rare find in the 21st century and well worth going out of the way to meet and to experience his simple but charming hospitality, and his wise words about your wardrobe. He is very highly recommended and will make you into a new man.

This was my first visit to this tailor (not my first visit to a bespoke tailor) and I was only looking for two shirts during this visit to Thailand. David, the assistant, was very relaxed and welcoming, produced samples to meet my specific requests and made his own suggestions as well. He became far more serious during the measuring and when I noticed that I had lost a button on my trousers, promptly sewed one back on. Thank you. On my return for a fitting, the ‘boss’ was there with his son and it became more like a family gathering. The shirt required no alterations and I picked up both shirts a couple of days later. Both were very well made, in particular the collar (in my opinion). Of course an attempt was made to persuade me to buy a suit but no hard sell, just a relaxed hint (I priced a middle-of-the-range (for bespoke) suit made with VBC material and it was again reasonable). Several days later, I decided I would buy a third shirt but discovered that I would be away and returning when they would be closed for the new year and leaving Thailand shortly after that. No problem and the shirt was delivered to my hotel and was waiting for me on my return. Costs for shirt material ranges from very reasonable indeed to much more expensive. I chose one Egyptian cotton and two soft, Italian cotton shirts, more expensive but reasonably so and value for money. This is not a tailor that is going to make you a shirt in 24 hours, they require a little more time that to achieve the high standards but you will receive a shirt that is very well made and you will receive courteous, relaxed and professional attention to your requirements. I would be happy to return.
