Nakhon Phanom Provincial Governor’s Residence Museum is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Sunthorn Vijit Road Naimueang Subdistrict, 48000, Thailand
A nice break from walking in the sun along the Mekong river. The museum offers a glimpse into the history of Nakhon Phanom. There is also a section explaining how the “Fire Boat” was constructed, which was very interesting to us cause we had just seen the “Fire Boat Procession” a night before
The photos and reviews written are about two different buildings. One building is on the river. It is now a museum, but used to be the provincial governor’s mansion. It is very interesting to learn about the fire boat processions, the various tribal / ethnic groups that have settled in the area, and other historical aspects, so it is highly recommended to visit the museum. The much larger building, which is located near the city pillar, is a library and unless you are proficient in written Thai, it is not worth a visit unless you are keenly interested in colonial style buildings.
The building is undoubtedly the highlight of this attraction. The potted history of local governors, the building’s construction, and the short history of the boat procession in the rear building are quite interesting, though in desperate need of a decent copywriter for the English translation. However, the star is without doubt the lovely interior and beautifully restored colonial style mansion. Made me want to live there.
Go and see the beautiful government building. It is in typical old government style and very well maintained. The building is worth a trip.
Did not expect much however enjoyed both the building and displays. Enough English to give information about the history of the area.
Story of grandma Toom was very toughing. Good memory how Thai people respect to the king Rama 9. King of the king.
This old building of the Governor was a place where the late King Rama9 stayed while he visited the province. So they set this as a historic building with many items shown for the public.
This Indo-Chinese style building houses a small museum. It’s a lovely building and the museum also has some information in English. The building is also of note as as king Rama the 9th once stayed here.
This free entrance museum is on Mekong riverbank. It is a French Colonial style two storey yellow building constructed between 1912 to 1914. It served as Nakhon Phanom governor’s residence until 1984. Also, it was once a guesthouse for King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit during their visitation to Nakhon Phanom in 1955.On the first floor, it narrates the memories of local resident and biographies of the former governors through the photos. It’s also provides an interesting information about 8 tribes of indigenous peoples of Nakhon Phanom, whether it be their background, lifestyle, or cultural diversity. The second floor express the story with images and sound of the time while his majesty the King and Queen came for overnight visits. It’s also exhibits the large bedroom where his majesty the King and Queen were in residence. There is a shop where visitors can support the museum by purchase some souvenirs. We also bought a shirt and a cute fridge magnet here.
